Travel to FalkLand Palace, the Scottish Stuart kings James IV and James V transformed Falkland into a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture. They got the idea from French chateaux. Mary, Queen of Scots, visited the farm frequently to hawk, hunt, and ride her horse around. She also loved the royal tennis court in the house. It is the world’s oldest real tennis court that is still in use.
The Palace
The Stuart kings and queens loved to go on vacation to Falkland Palace. Travel to FalkLand Palace, it is now open to the public and is a royal “pleasure palace” with a Victorian twist. The grounds’ beautiful flowers, plants, trees, and streams go well with the palace’s beautiful Renaissance building. Check out the palace’s many rooms, such as the church with its brightly colored windows, the bedrooms with their four-poster beds, and the library that you might not know about. Walk along one of Britain’s oldest real tennis courts, built for James V, and relish the beauty of the blooming field and Physic Garden.

Falkland Palace has some of the oldest grounds in Scotland. Designed in the Renaissance, the grounds boast beautiful flowerbeds and medicinal herbs. Travel to FalkLand Palace, originally intended to cultivate medicinal flowers, the Physic Garden now primarily serves aesthetic purposes. It has trees and shrubs like wisteria, roses, and ceanothus that do well on the warm, protected palace walls.
The 3rd Marquis of Bute and his children and grandchildren bought the grounds in 1887. The family gave the National Trust for Scotland the job of taking care of the house and its gardens. In the Gardens
The gardens at Falkland Palace are one of the great things about the Scottish Renaissance. The designers modeled them after the gardens of large French chateaux. Several Stuart kings and queens turned this popular hideaway into the Balmoral of its time. Travel to FalkLand Palace, the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) now takes care of Falkland Palace and its gardens, thanks to the kind gifts of the late Major Michael Crichton Stewart.
The park you see today likely began construction in the 1400s as a replacement for a castle that the Crown confiscated in 1437. Between the late 1800s and early 1900s, Percy Cane added to the yard.

He knew that he had to keep the remains of an older, bigger house and make them stand out more. To do this, he replaced the broken east wall with columnar Lawson cypresses, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana. He also made good use of the sandstone walls by planning a set of big steps with striped paving. Travel to FalkLand Palace, the NTS replaced the plants in a way that stayed true to Cane’s original design. He used a variety of trees and flowers to create color schemes that stood out.
Not long ago, the NTS worked to get animals back onto the grounds at Falkland Palace. The Pleasure Grounds maintain uncut grass, fostering plant growth and attracting insects essential for pollinating the fruit trees in the ancient garden. Travel to FalkLand Palace, the yard team has also begun to bring back red foxes, whose numbers have been dropping since the early 1900s. They now have a place to live.
In the stables
Falkland’s palace has towers and a gate that make it look like something from a fairy tale. But once you step inside, there is a lot to see. The sitting room, in addition to the beautiful Chapel Royal and the re-created King’s and Queen’s rooms, has a lot of fine woodwork. Travel to FalkLand Palace, you can also see the Old Library and the renovated Cross House next to the East Range’s ruins, as well as the Keeper’s Quarters in the South Range, which have beautiful wood paneling.

James V and his family built the beautiful limestone palace between 1501 and 1541. It replaced castle and palace buildings from the 12th century, which you can still see on the grounds. Travel to FalkLand Palace, the beautiful Chapel Royal is in the south wing, and the King’s and Queen’s rooms are in the east end.
Keep an eye out for Falklands-style roofs with pan tiles, crow-stepped gables, outside stairs, and marriage lintels. Look closely at the carved heads on the pillars and caps of the stairs that lead to the palace’s front. You can also see them on doors in the South Range and the courtyard.

The team worked hard to turn Falkland’s yard into a safe place for wildlife. Travel to FalkLand Palace, for the past four years, the team has only cut the grass once a year, encouraging the growth of insects that consume grass.
The Tea Room and Gift Shop
Falkland is a calm and friendly place, even though it has a lot of history. Pictish symbol stones in the museum, beautiful trees in the grounds, and wildflower fields all over the estate are clear examples of the National Trust’s work to protect the environment.
Explore a Renaissance castle and a royal hunting lodge, both constructed for Mary, Queen of Scots. In the nearby forest, the Stuart kings and queens used the lodge to hunt deer and wild boar. Explore the impressive collection of pictures, carvings, and furniture, or visit one of Britain’s oldest real tennis courts, still in use today.

The gardens are also beautiful to look at, with brightly colored herbaceous borders and a living willow labyrinth that kids love to explore. There is also an orchard, a physic garden, a wildflower meadow, and climbers such as wisteria and ceanothus that grow up the walls of the palace for warmth and protection. It’s easy to picture kings and queens going through the park today, just like they did 500 years ago.

Beautiful paneled keeper’s rooms adorn the south range of the palace, while the King’s and Queen’s Rooms, rebuilt to depict the life of a Stuart king or queen, occupy the east range next to it. The farm also has an interesting museum with two of the best examples of Pictish stone with cup and ring marks (see chapter 8). The Museum also houses two fragments of a contemporary double disc sign, discovered at Westfleld Farm, NO 238073, prior to its demolition in 1971.
